Study Permit
for International Students/Foreign Nationals

Why attain a Canadian Study Permit?
Successfully obtaining admission approval from the education institution does NOT guarantee you to enter Canada. Your journey to Canada may not proceed until you secured the Study Permit.
The Study Permit is a document Immigration, Refugees, & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issues that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. Generally, you must apply for a study permit Online and before you come to Canada. You may apply a study permit if you are already INSIDE Canada with a valid status.
A study permit is not a visa and does not, by itself, allow you to travel to or enter Canada. You may also need a Temporary Resident Visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). If you do, IRCC will issue your TRV or eTA if you don’t have one already with your study permit.
To be eligible for a Study Permit you must prove that:
-
you have received the acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution
-
have sufficient money to pay for your tuition fees; living expenses that meet the minimum requirement of IRCC for your self and any family members who come with you to Canada and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
-
obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate if required
-
are in good health and get a medical exam if required and
-
prove that you will leave Canada when you study permit expires.
-
prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires
